Link Transit Awards Surplus Vans to Five Local Nonprofits

Link Transit has awarded surplus vehicles to five local nonprofit organizations through its Surplus Van Grant Program, helping expand critical transportation services across North Central Washington. This year’s recipients are Brave Warrior NCW, the Chelan Boys & Girls Club, the Chelan Senior Center, Lake Wenatchee Fire & Rescue, and Purpose Boxing.

The Surplus Van Grant Program provides retired Link Transit vans to eligible nonprofit organizations and public agencies in Chelan and Douglas counties. The program is designed to address transportation gaps for seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and other underserved community members.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and agencies that primarily serve residents within the Chelan-Douglas Public Transportation Benefit Area (PTBA), particularly those providing services to seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

“These organizations improve lives in North Central Washington every day,” said Chris Clark, Link’s Rideshare Coordinator who manages the grant program. “Link appreciates the opportunity to help broaden the scope and reach of the services and programs they provide within our community.”

Recipient organizations emphasized the critical role transportation plays in serving their clients.

“Many young adults and adults with disabilities in our community face significant barriers to transportation,” shared Brave Warrior NCW. “Families often lack reliable, accessible vehicles, and public transportation options may not meet the sensory, medical, or mobility needs of this population. This vehicle will allow us to provide safe, reliable, and inclusive transportation so participants can access the programs and opportunities they deserve.”

Lake Wenatchee Fire & Rescue highlighted the needs of the older adults they serve. “The population we support is almost exclusively over age 65 and often lacks personal transportation or should not drive for safety reasons. Many live alone, and our program focuses on preventative health care.” The organization provides transportation to medical appointments, pharmacies, food banks, and emergency evacuation situations.

The Chelan Senior Center emphasized the importance of mobility and connection. “Mobilization and socialization are crucial for the well-being of older adults, positively impacting their physical, mental, and emotional health. Reliable transportation and companionship are mutually reinforcing. By prioritizing both, we can help ensure seniors have the opportunity to enjoy a higher quality of life.”

“Link Transit values its partnerships with agencies across the communities we serve and is committed to using our resources to directly address local transportation needs,” said Link CEO Nick Covey. “We’re proud of this grant program and the positive impact it will have on the quality of life for so many of our residents.”
